While visiting Kansas City, I found the time to venture out with Duane to a very interesting venue called Knuckleheads. Located in an industrial area, the venue is an eclectic piece of real estate, containing three separate stages: a small stage located just inside the venue doors, a large stage in the main hall of the bar, and a fairly large outdoor stage with a terrace overlooking. I mentioned to Duane that I'm sure there's been many a bar fight here, as drinks were cheap and the crowd displayed a hint of rowdiness. But there were no fights this night, but a heaping supply of good ole fashioned music.
Truckstop Honeymoon (Lawrence, KS) opened the night with their blend of bluegrass, rock, story-telling, and comedy. Most of the their set contained 'true stories' from life on the road, much of which was very funny and relatable to daily life. With sing-alongs and crowd participation, their performance was a good time and a great warm up to Southern Culture on the Skids.
By time Southern Culture had taken the stage, the outdoor space was packed, as well as the terrace and much of the indoor seating; the performance can be watched on a projector screen located at the large indoor stage. It didn't take long for Southern Culture to whip the crowd into a dancing, hollering frenzy with a large dose of surf-inspired rockabilly. Their songs are easy to enjoy as their lyrics are simple, music is upbeat, and their live performance has been polished greatly. I was fairly surprised at how long their set was, but I must have been the only one, as the crowd stayed nearly intact for the entire show. It was a fun night, filled with great music within a complimentary atmosphere. Photos of the show are below:
